You'd Be Crazy To Miss It!

Yeeha - Shrewsbury's West End has been transformed into America's Wild West.

For the curtain has just gone up on a town theatre group's tenth anniversary show - Gershwin's Broadway hit Crazy for You.

Web 463Mad Cow Productions is staging the all-singing, all dancing production at Theatre Severn.

Much of the cast has had to learn new skills for the musical - which runs until Saturday - including fight choreography, tap dancing and rope handling.

And three members of the same Oswestry family are appearing on stage together.

Annette Edge and her twin sons Danny and Terry, aged 23, all joined up together, drawn by their love of the show's music and comic storyline.

Annette said “It's great, we have a lot of fun and there is a natural rapport when we are on stage. I love it that we can be involved in something we all enjoy together.”

Terry and Danny play cowboys Moose and Pete in the show, while Annette is part of the ladies' ensemble.

Crazy For You marks a return to the stage for preschool teaching assistant Annette, who has previously trained at drama school Italia Conti.

Danny said “It’s a very enjoyable experience to perform alongside mum for the first time. It’s also extremely beneficial having her help me at home with the different dance numbers.

“The show has given us all different challenges that we are unfamiliar with” added Terry. “As well as most of us learning tap dancing for the first time, we've covered stage combat, rope handling and even swinging pickaxes!”

Alex Hinton, director for Mad Cow Productions, said the show was the culmination of six months of hard work.

"It has just culminated in four days of a very intense technical transfer to Theatre Severn," she said

"It was very hard work getting the set, props, costumes, sound and lighting to professional standards. Our crew has been putting in 14 hour days culminating in a dress rehearsal on Wednesday which looked stunning.

"As director I couldn't be more proud of The Herd."

She added: "The entire company is buzzing with excitement. They know they're in something special."

Alex said theatre-goers can expect "sublime music played by our live orchestra."

She added: "They can also expect some very glamorous costumes, including the enormous feathered showgirl ensembles.

"We have high production values, set, sound and lighting, and many many props joined with a heart warming story line that should make an audience laugh and have a tear in their eye but also send them home with a spring in their step."

This week's show marks the ten year anniversary of the group.

Alex said: "We have really gone that extra mile for our tenth anniversary. Crazy For You is a classic comic musical that we think is guaranteed to please our audiences and make them laugh, which is central to Mad Cow's mission.

"The combination of the Gershwin brothers instantly recognisable songs, Ken Ludwig's sparkling comedic script, and multi- Tony Award winner Susan Stroman's Broadway choreography adds up to an all time classic show.

"The contrast of the glamorous showgirls and the lazy cowboys was inspired."

She added: "We set ourselves the task of not cutting the usual corners when this show is produced in the amateur world.

"This has meant six months of hard work by the entire company, not just the main principals and the 'Herd' has risen to the challenge."

The show features Gershwin’s most well-known songs including I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me, The Way You Wear Your Hat, Slap That Bass and the inimitable Embraceable You. The story begins when Bobby Child dreams of escaping his boring day job in the bank to become a dancer on Broadway.
