Change Of Scene For Top Opera Singer
On 20th January 2010, the Shropshire Star wrote: "A top opera singer who has performed with The English National Opera and at The Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden, is set to appear in an amateur production in Shropshire."
Cathy Benson, from Burlton, near Ellesmere, studied at The Guildhall School of Music with Noelle Barker before embarking on a successful freelance career singing a wide variety of repertoire. She still performs regularly in Shropshire with many county choral societies and recently sang at The Church Stretton Festival and with the Shrewsbury Choral Society as a soloist in The Messiah.
Career highlights include singing as the soloist in Johann Strauss Galas for Raymond Gubbay all over the country. When family life began to take priority several years ago she joined Birmingham Conservatoire to teach singing.
But now in a change of pace she has been given the chance to try something new and will be taking to the stage in an acting and singing role playing a Roman wife with Shrewsbury-based Mad Cow Productions.
Cathy said “Opera will always be my first love but it’s great to be able to learn new techniques and work with such a super group of talented and enthusiastic people.”
The amateur group’s latest production A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum will take place at Theatre Severn from April 14th to 17th.The musical farce will be performed in the Walker Theatre at 7.30pm.
