Shrewsbury theatre production becomes a real family affair
An upcoming production at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn is proving to be a real family affair for one theatrical mother and daughter.
Natalie Wyatt and her daughter Daisy, 15, will take to the stage for the feel good cult classic Hairspray, which opens at the riverside venue at the end of the month. They joined Shrewsbury-based Mad Cow Productions and say the experience of working together on stage has been moo-verllous.
Natalie, who lives in Shrewsbury, works as a Tempest School photographer and as a freelancer. No stranger to the stage, she completed her professional Musical Theatre training at GSA (Guilford School of Acting) whose famous alumni include Michael Ball, Celia Imrie and Brenda Blethyn, OBE. Daisy is a pupil at The Priory School in Shrewsbury and inspired by her mum, she is also looking to train professionally. Natalie is usually Daisy’s chief taxi to dance and drama classes but now they are to appear on stage together.
Natalie will appear as the Hairspray baddie Velma Von Tussel – and Daisy as one of the Nicest Kids. “It’s great to finally do something like this with Daisy,” said Natalie. “I have missed performing so much and, although I have loved taking a back seat and watching Daisy’s talents go from strength to strength, it is nice to spend some quality time together in the same rehearsal and share this really wonderful experience with her.”
Daisy says that their roles seem to have completely reversed since they joined the award winning ‘herd’. She said: “I’m now the one giving mum positive feedback and helping to boost her confidence.” Natalie added: “Daisy is enjoying seeing the old me, and what I used to do before I settled down and had a family, and I think that’s given me just a little bit more credibility in her eyes – maybe! “The whole herd at Mad Cow have taken us under their wing – it really is like family.
We can’t wait for show time and getting out there on the fantastic Theatre Severn stage, together and with our extended Mad Cow Family.” Hairspray – the story of Tracy Turnblad, the girl with the big hair and an even bigger heart – who dreams of appearing on her favourite TV show, originally a 1988 film starring Divine and Ricki Lake, and directed by John Waters.
The musical, based on the film, hit Broadway in 2002 and won eight out of thirteen Tony Award nominations. It ran for over 2,500 performances on Broadway and closed on January 4, 2009. Hairspray has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions and was adapted as a 2007 musical film. The London production was nominated for a record-setting eleven Laurence Olivier Awards, winning for Best New Musical and in three other categories. A new professional UK tour is coming later in 2015. Hairspray will open at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn on April 30 and run until May 2. Tickets are available from the box office on 01743 281281.
